20 Dec Wrapping Up the Year (+ Landscape)
While we’re busy wrapping gifts for loved ones, we’re also wrapping your landscape with care this December! Our team has been hard at work on properties this month, bundling up trees to protect them from winter’s challenges.
We time this work carefully, waiting until December when trees are sufficiently dormant, and their growth has slowed. This measure is important for newly planted trees, specifically those on the cusp of our hardiness zones and those species with thin bark, like the Crepe Myrtles. Adding a layer of protection to the plant’s vascular tissue helps to prevent problems like sunscald or frost cracks.
If you’ve ever seen a tree begin budding in winter, you’ve seen this phenomenon in action: intense sunlight warms the bark, tricking the tree into thinking spring has arrived and causing sap to flow. When a cold snap hits, that sap can freeze, expand, and crack the bark—especially in delicate branches near the canopy. Wrapping helps buffer the plant from extreme temperature swings, protect the tree from false starts, and ensure it stays safely dormant until spring.
